It originates on the fibular malleolus, the bony protrusion on the outside of the ankle joint, and then runs forward and inward to connect to the talus bone. Its role is to stabilise the talus. Anterior talofibular ligament (atfl) injury is the most common of the ligament injuries that can occur as part of the lateral ligament complex injuries 2.

It is also the weakest of the lateral collateral ankle ligaments. The anterior talofibular ligament passes from the tip of the lateral malleolus to the talus anteriorly. It is also a common condition in the general population (1). Its role is to stabilise the talus.
